What is your relationship like?

Relationships are important, but what is your relationship with food? Some have a good relationship with food, while others have been indoctrinated into diet culture, which can cause a not so great relationship with food. The good news is you can always improve it!

A good relationship with food involves having unconditional permission to eat the foods that make you feel good physically and mentally. No foods are off-limits, and you feel NO guilt upon eating foods that are typically labeled "good" or "bad."

So, let's take a look at you. Do you have a bad relationship with food? Signs that you may, are: You feel guilty when you eat certain foods, you have a list of rules surrounding food, you restrict foods that you deem are bad, you restrict, then binge on foods.

Here are some tips to improve your relationship with foods:

  1. Give yourself unconditional permission to eat. When you set rules around food, you are setting yourself up to fear foods. You deserve to eat whatever, whenever you want.

  2. Eat when you are hungry. Diet culture teaches us to eat a certain number of calories, but your body knows best. Eat when you are hungry. Stop when you are full.

  3. Practice mindful eating. Be fully in the moment when you are eating. Slow down and savor your food. This helps you be more in tune with your body.

  4. Welcome all foods in your diet. There are no "bad" foods. When you allow all foods, you are more likely not to binge on foods.

  5. Mind your plate. You do not have to justify what you are eating to yourself or anyone else. Eat what feels best to you at the moment.

A good relationship with foods doesn't happen overnight. It takes practice and knowledge. I know if you try these tips, you can do it and say no more to diet culture.
